Abstract
This study is about the cultural clash portrayed in the main character of the film The Karate Kid. This study aims to find the portrait of cultural clash, the portrait of Chinese culture, and the impacts of cultural clash toward in the main character in The Karate Kid film. The existence of cultural disparities makes the main character to adjust his new environment and culture.
This study is under descriptive qualitative research. It uses two data called primary data and secondary data. The primary data are taken from the The Karate Kid Film. Meanwhile, the secondary data are taken from books, articles, e-journals, and online sources. There are three steps of data collecting method: watching the film, identifying the data, classifying the data. It is supported by two steps of data analyzing method: analyzing and reporting the data.
This study finds different background of culture causes cultural clash. It also reveals confucianism, obedience, belief, taoism, and buddhism as the part of Chinese cultures. Cultural clash results some problems that have to be faced by the main character; which is bullying. This is the point makes the main character tries to adjust himself in his new environment and culture by recognizing and respecting Chinese culture in order to get better live in China.
