Abstract

This study analyzes the heroic narrative structure of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018) by applying Christopher Vogler’s theory of the Hero’s Journey. This study aims to identify the twelve stages of the Hero’s Journey as represented in the character of Miles Morales and to examine the archetypes that emerge throughout the film.
This study used a qualitative descriptive method, with primary data taken from the film script and secondary data from books, journals, and online references related to Vogler’s theory. The data were collected through repeated watching the film, close reading of the film script, and classification of dialogues, monologues, and narratives according to Vogler’s theory.
The findings reveal that Miles Morales’s journey corresponds to the twelve stages of the Hero’s Journey, including the Ordinary World, Call to Adventure, Refusal of the Call, Meeting with the Mentor, Crossing the Threshold, Tests, Allies, Enemies, Approach to the Inmost Cave, Ordeal, Reward, Road Back, Resurrection, and Return with the Elixir. In addition, the analysis identifies several archetypes embodied in the film, such as the Hero and Allies, which reinforce Miles’s transformation from an ordinary teenager into a true hero.
