Abstract
This research explores both the diasporic experiences and the impact of those experiences in Ali’s Wedding (2017) movie. The representation of diasporic experience and the impacts of diaspora is evident in the characterizations of Mahdi, Zahra, Ali, and Mohammed.
This study employed a descriptive qualitative method. The qualitative descriptive data were gathered from dialogues and monologues within the movie. To obtain the necessary information, this study applied a descriptive qualitative design, which involved watching the movie, examining its script, identifying relevant data, classifying the data, and finally reducing them for analysis. The primary data were sourced directly from the movie script, while secondary data were collected from journals, articles, and e-books related to the theories used in this study. The analysis was carried out using a sociological approach, drawing upon William Safran’s diaspora theory and John W. Berry’s concepts of assimilation and integration to explain the impacts of diasporic experience.
This study reveals four of six characteristics of diaspora depicted in the movie, there are they or their ancestors have been scattered from one central homeland to several and overseas areas, they retain a collective memory, myth, and vision about their homeland, they would continue to be personally connected to their homeland in one way or another, and they must preserve or restore their homeland. The study also identifies two of four acculturation strategies shaped by diasporic experience adopted by the characters.
Keywords: diaspora, acculturation, integration, assimilation, Ali’s Wedding.
