Abstract
This study analyzes a literary work in the form of a movie that presents ethnocentrism as an effect of cultural diversity. The purpose of this research is to find out the ethnocentrism experienced by four characters (Tito, Eva, Ben, and Marcus) and the way to overcome it that is shown by five characters (Ben, Eva, Marcus, Sindy and Andre) in Richard LaGravene's Freedom Writers.
The study used qualitative method. All of the data are gathered by watching the movie, reading the movie script, identifying, classifying, and reducing the data. The primary data of the study were in the form of narration, monologue, and dialogue of the movie itself. The secondary data that supported primary data is taken from journals, articles, and internet sites related to the study. The selected data is interpreted by a descriptive technique.
The result of the study finds that there are four portrayals of ethnocentrism. The first is a belief that their group is better than others; the second is ethnocentrism includes negative attitudes such as discrimination violence, and intergroup conflict; the third is ethnocentrism contains pro-in-group or in-group solidarity and the last is ethnocentrism rejects the other groups. To solve the ethnocentrism in the movie Freedom Writers, Developmental Model of Intercultural Sensitivity is used. The stages of the Developmental Model of Intercultural Sensitivity are ethnocentric stage and ethnorelative stage. Every stages consists of three stages. The ethnocentric stage consists of denial, defense, and minimization. Furthermore, the ethnorelative stage consists of acceptance, adaptation, and integration. The result of the study finds that ethnocentrism can be solved with two stages of the Developmental Model of Intercultural Sensitivity.
