Abstract

This study analyzes women stereotypes that occur in the nineteenth century society. This final project is aimed to analyze women stereotypes and the struggles againts those stereotypes and their effects towards the female characters in the novel. The object of this study is Louisa May Alcott’s novel entitled Little Women. The writer uses descriptive qualitative analysis. The data of the study are in the form of phrases, sentences, and dialogue. The data are gathered by reading the novel, identifying, classifying, and reporting. The analysis is done by several techniques including exposing, explaining and interpreting. The analysis finds several findings. Firstly, the comparison between the female characters who are going along with the stereotypes that labeled them and others who do not agree and try to change the stereotypes by performing opposite traits. Women are stereotyped as weak, passive, dependent, content, domestic, familial and stick persistently to the traditon and manner. Those traits and rules are expected to be ensued, but according to the others, those traits are forced on women because they can actually be strong, active, independent, ambitious, public and individual. Secondly, there are different effects that occur to those who follow the stereotypes and who dont. The one who follows receive provisions and favorable chances rather than those who are againts which not only receive negative remarks but also the cold treatment to be dealt with. The study found that women stereotype is one of the major themes in the novel and women are struggling to change those traits that are labeled on them. Women who are going along with the stereotypes receive positive responses while those who are fighting against them receive negative responses. On the basis of the conclusion, several suggestions can be offered. First, God has made us into women and men that have to respect each other. Gender diversity should not be a measure how superior and inferior one gender is to each other. Keywords: Women stereotypes, effects of women stereotypes
