Abstract

Task Based Language Teaching is one of the method in teaching which is used to improve reading comprehension skill. The purpose of the research was to find out the effectiveness of task based language teaching to improve students’ reading comprehension of XI grade students at SMA Filial Negeri 1 Gubug in the academic year 2017/2018. This study used the quasi experimental design. There were four steps in conducting this research; try out, pre-test, treatment, and post-test. The subject of this study was the eleventh grade of SMA filial Negeri 1 in the academic year of 2017/2018. Start from the mean pretest score in experimental group was 59.281 and for control group was 60.612. After conducting pretest, the writer gave the treatments in the four times in the experimental group. The result of the data showed that the mean of the score of post-test in experimental group was 70.93 while the control group was 62.9. It was supported by the result of T-test that showed sig(2-tailed) was 0.002. It means that there was significant difference in the result of post-test between experimental group which taught using conventional method. Based on the result of the research, it was concluded that task based language teaching as a method in learning English to improve students’ reading comprehension was effective that was used in teaching. It was recommended as an alternative method to develop and get involve deeper the students’ participation in reading comprehension activity.
