Abstract

The Final project was about the use of role-play as teaching speaking strategy to foster students’ motivation in speaking English. The objectives of this study were to try to foster the students’ motivation as the learning problem that the students have by improving the teaching flaws. For that case, the researcher proposed role play strategy to foster the students’ motivation in speaking English. This study was conducted in SMA ISLAM SULTAN AGUNG 3, which is located in Jl. Raya Kaligawe, Km. 4, Muktiharjo, Genuk, Terboyo Kulon, Kec. Genuk, Kota Semarang, Jawa Tengah, 50111. The type of this study of this study was collaborative action research. The population of this study was SMA ISLAM SULTAN AGUNG 3 and the sample was X MIPA 2. The researcher used one class as sample of this study. The data was collected through several activities. They were preliminary study, cycle 1 activity, cycle 2 activity, and questionnaire. The study was focusing on three aspects of motivation (persistence, activation and intensity). The result of analysis showed that there were gradual improvements to significant improvements. It means there was an effectiveness of this teaching strategy. It was also supported by questionnaire, as the results of affective aspect of the students. The result indicated positive responses. It means that the use of role-play strategy was effective and helpful to foster students’ motivation in speaking English. Keywords: Role-Play Strategy, Teaching Strategy, Students’ Motivation.
