Abstract

This final project is aimed at investigating students’ speaking ability through an adapted Cambridge Preliminary English Test. Descriptive quantitative was used for design of this research. Oral test was used to collect the data from the subject of the research. The subject of the research was tenth grade students of Al-Fattah Semarang Senior High School in the year academic of 2016/2017. From the descriptive statistic table which scored for X IPA it shows that the minimum score was 56, the maximum score was 88, mean was 71.56 from total 20 students. To know the general description, the students’ scores were classified into five criteria; they are very poor, poor mediocre, good and very good. From 20 students, there were 5 students had very good speaking ability (25%), 14 students had good speaking ability (75%) and 1 student had mediocre speaking ability (5%). The result in X IPS shows that the minimum score was 50, the maximum score was 72 and mean was 58.44 from total 20 students. The classification results were 7 students had good speaking ability (35%) and 13 students had mediocre speaking ability (65%). Finally, this can be summarized; the results of students’ speaking ability for the tenth grade students of Al-Fattah are 5 students had very good speaking ability (12.5%), 14 students had mediocre speaking ability (35%) and 21 students had good speaking ability (52.5%).
