Abstract

This study deals with the positive impacts of multiculturalism toward American ethnocentrism negative issues as reflected in Crash film. This film mostly shows many kind of multicultural issues such as ethnocentrism and multiculturalism. Ethnocentrism contributes in great impacts for shaping social conflicts in negative context, whereas multiculturalism proposes positive aims to maintain social relationship. Hence, this research aims to analyze the contexts of both multiculturalism and ethnocentrism by exposing the positive impacts positive of multiculturalism toward American ethnocentrism negative issues.
This study is under descriptive qualitative research that focuses on processingthe data. The primary data is the film entitled Crash while the secondary data come from movie scripts, journals, e-books, screenshots, and online sources. The data can be in the forms of monologues and dialogues which are gathered through the process of watching, reading, identifying, analyzing, and reporting.Furthermore, this undergraduate thesis also applies Theory of Conflict to get deep understanding dealing with the correlation of multiculturalism and ethnocentrism as reflected in film Crash.
This study results that cross cultural understanding is greatly needed to solve the problems dealing with ethnocentrism and multiculturalism. To live among American modern society has positive and negative consequences. Crash film clearly portrays on how ethnocentrism, stereotype, prejudice, and violence exist in the term of social interaction. Conflicts come up because of misunderstanding cultural disparities and incompatible situations. Conflicts can be cut down by the process of recognizing, respecting, acknowledging, valuing, encouraging, enabling, and empowering in positive ways to solve the conflict itself.
