Abstract

This study analyses the self-concept of Elsa as the main character in Frozen (2013) using Carl Rogers’ Self Theory. The study focuses on the characteristics of the real self, ideal self, and fully functioning person portrayed by Elsa throughout the film, as reflected in her experiences as a queen who struggles with fear, emotional suppression, and self-acceptance due to her extraordinary powers.
This study employed a descriptive qualitative research method. The data used consisted of dialogues and monologues taken from the script of Frozen (2013). The data were collected through several steps, including watching the film repeatedly, reading the script, identifying relevant data, classifying the data, and reducing the data based on the research objectives. This study applied a psychological approach to literature using Carl Rogers’ Self Theory.
The results show that Elsa demonstrates aspects of the real self, ideal self, and fully functioning person throughout the film. Elsa’s real self is reflected in her growing awareness that her ice powers are not purely dangerous but a meaningful part of her identity, as she gradually shifts from fear and self-rejection to self-acceptance and a sense of belonging through the love she receives from Anna and the people of Arendelle. Meanwhile, Elsa’s ideal self is reflected in her desire to become a responsible queen and caring sister, which leads her to realize that true growth comes from honesty and self-acceptance rather than emotional suppression. As a fully functioning person, Elsa embraces her powers, expresses her emotions freely during “Let It Go,” and confidently uses her abilities to help others, reflecting emotional maturity and personal growth.
