Abstract

This study aims to examine how Nathan Feuerstein, professionally known as NF, portrays personal struggles with mental disorders in his 2019 album The Search. Applying Lucien Goldmann’s genetic structuralism. The research investigates the ways NF channels his personal experiences and emotional challenges through his music. Unlike broader studies on mental health, this research focuses specifically on NF’s perspective, exploring how his artistry reflects both individual struggles and shared human experiences.
This research employs a qualitative approach. Primary data were obtained by closely listening to the album and analyzing its lyrics, while secondary sources such as interviews, articles, and journals provided additional context. Collected data were systematically identified, classified, and reduced, and analysis was conducted through a Genetic Structuralist framework to interpret NF’s representation of mental disorders in his music.
The analysis revealed that The Search captured NF’s struggles with obsessive-compulsive tendencies, trauma, depression, anxiety, suicidal ideation, and coping mechanisms. He communicated these challenges through intrinsic elements, including his lyrics, song structure, and musical patterns, as well as extrinsic elements, such as his personal experiences and the broader social and cultural context of 2019. The study demonstrated a dynamic interaction between NF’s inner emotions and the world around him, showing how his artistic choices were shaped by both personal and social factors. Ultimately, his music resonated with listeners facing similar struggles, highlighting the power of honest storytelling in connecting personal and collective experiences.
