Abstract

This study is about teaching descriptive writing using miniatures to the
seventh grade students in SMP N 1 Donorojo Jepara. The purpose of this study is
to know how far miniatures to improve of students in descriptive writing.
In conducting the study, the writer used quasi-experimental design that
applied the pre-test and post-test non-equivalent control groups design because in
this research, random sampling was not used. The population of the study was the
seventh grade students of SMP N 1 Donorojo Jepara in the Academic Year of
2013/2014 and in taking the sample she used a purposive sampling technique. In
collecting the data, she used writing test as the instrument. The writer used two
kinds of test: pre test and post test. Before the experiment was conducted, a pre
test was given to both groups. A post test was given after the treatment was done.
Then, the data from two tests were scored and the writer used SPSS for Windows
version 16.0 to analyze the result of the pre test and post test.
The result of the T-test showed that the mean score of the experimental
group in pre test was 64.3 and the mean score of the control group was 61.8. After
conducting the experiment, the writer gave the post test. The mean score of the
post test of the experimental group was 71.7 and that of the control group was
66.4. The T-test calculation shows that the difference is significant.
Teaching a descriptive writing text using miniatures is a good way for the
students and the English teacher should be creative in creating the new ideas to
teach English writing.
