Abstract

This study was about how effective the use of Acrostic mnemonic to improve students’ reading comprehension skill in Recount text. The objective of this study was to find out whether the use of Acrostic mnemonic was effective or not to improve eight graders’ reading comprehension in Recount text. Quasi experimental design was used in this study. In addition, Quantitative data research was used in this study to prove the result of this study. The population of this study was the eighth graders of SMP N 4 Sukatani in the academic year 2016/2017 with the total student was 81. The sample of this study were 53 students; 27 students were from VIII A as experimental class while 26 students were from VIII B as control class. Those sample were taken by using purposive sampling technique. Test in a form of multiple choice was used in this study for collecting data from the sample. The result of this study showed that the pre-test mean score of experimental class was 55.37 while the pre-test mean score of control class was 54.42. After giving the treatment for four meetings, the mean score of experimental class increased to 72.59 while control class increased to 63.65. The gain score of each class showed that the experimental class increased by 17.22 while the control class increased by 9.23. The result of the analysis showed that Sig. (2 tailed) was 0.006 < 0.05 and t-value is higher than t-table (2.871>2.000). It means that Ha was accepted and Ho was rejected. Therefore, it could be concluded that the use of Acrostic mnemonic was effective to improve student’s reading comprehension skill in Recount Text.
