Abstract

teaching technique is effective to improve students’ pronunciation mastery of the Tenth Grade of MAN 2 Semarang in the academic year 2015/2016. This study was conducted at MAN 2 Semarang which is located on Jl. Bangetayu Raya No. 1, Semarang Central Java, Indonesia. The type of this study was action research. The population of this study was the tenth graders of MAN 2 Semarang and the sample were XIPA1. In collecting the data, the researcher had two cycles. The result of this study showed that the initial reflection was 50.24. The students made poor pronunciation on the words that, an, goo, shirt, earth, nothing, glee and cotton at the most. After giving treatment for fourth meetings, the last test in cycle 2 was 73.48. The result of the analysis showed that there was a significant difference. It was 23.24 points. Based on the results of initial reflection and the last test in cycle 2, the researcher concluded that before the students took the program most of the students made poor pronunciation. The range of poor pronunciation made by the students is around 5 words up to 13 words. The students made poor pronunciation on the words luve, newly, sprung, june, played, dry, sun, dear, run, fare, thee, were and mile at the most. After taking the program, there were three students made good pronunciation of all the words. Besides, other students also made improvement on several words. In the last test, it could be seen there were two students who still had difficulties. From the results above, it could be concluded that poems were effective to improve the students’ achievement in pronouncing English words, although not all of the students could pronounce the words well.
