Abstract

This study is about analysis of cultural relativism in American societies reflected in Freedom Writers film. The purpose of this study is to know the importance of cultural relativism as one of the best solutions in facing cultural conflicts. In conducting the study, the writer uses the theory of psychoanalytic literary criticism because the intrinsic aspects of the film are very interesting to be analyzed. In collecting the data, the writer used qualitative data that were taken from the film script, books, international journals, essay, and also American Encyclopedia. The result of the analysis showed that cultural conflicts must happen in multicultural societies and cultural relativism is one of the best solutions in solving them. It can be proven in the end of the story, almost all of the characters in the film will not fight again and they can respect each other. Respect over race is a good way in realizing a piece multicultural community. Cultural relativism is the tool for make it becomes true. People as human being are not different. All of them are same. We are human being should respect each other. Cultural relativism can be applied in daily life. By entering other cultures, we will know the standards of the culture itself, so we can tolerance if it is not appropriate with our culture.
