Abstract

Sri Zella Puspitasari,182080123. “The Effectiviness of Using Crossword Puzzle as a Media to Improve Students’ Irregular Verbs English Language Education Study Program, College of Languages Sultan Agung Islamic University. The first advisor: Hartono S.S., M.Pd. andthe second advisor: Drs. Liliek Soepritmadji, M.pd. Key words: Crossword Puzzles, Teaching Irregular Verb and Junior High School. The objective of the study was to find out the effectiveness of crossword puzzles when it is used to teaching student’s mastery in irregular verb of eighth graders of SMPN 1 Ampelgading in Academic year 2013/2014. To achieve the objective, the writer conducted an experimental research. The population of the research was the eighth graders of SMPN. 1. Ampelgading in academic year 2014/2015. The number of the sample of the research was 74 students who were divided into two groups, VIII A as the experimental group and VIII B as the control group. The research design used was quasi experimental design. In conducting this experimental research, the writer used three steps:pre-test, treatments, and post-test. To know the result of the study the writer used multiple choice test which consisted of 40 items. In the pre-test, the result of the study showed that the mean of control group was 61.77 and that of the experimental group was 61.94. In the post-test, the mean score of control group was 68.58 and that of the experimental group was 85.47. The result of the analysis showed that there was a significant difference. It was supported by the significant difference in the result of post test between control and experimental group. Based on the statistical analysis, it can be seen that sig was accepted. So, crossword puzzles is effective when it is used to teaching student’s mastery in irregular verb. 1
