Abstract

This study is about the analysis of the American Dream toward American society at the beginning of the twentieth century that portrayed in The Great Gatsby novel. The purpose of the study is to know the American culture, especially understanding the American Dream and portrayed feeling of inferiority complex and goal of life through the main characters in pursuing their dream as American Dream in the novel. A conducting to the study, the writer used a descriptive qualitative method and applied individual psychoanalytic based on Alfred Adler’s theory. The Great Gatsby novel was the primary data that formed the sentences, the monologues, and the dialogues in the novel. While, the secondary data, were taken from electronic books, international journals, essays, and website. Moreover, reading the novel, identifying the data, classifying the data, and reducing the data was the process of data collecting methods. The result of the analysis shows that the American Dream as ethos and the spirit of the American culture in achieving their dreams. It can be proven how their efforts, through the main characters’ psychology described their dreams. The study also assumes that liberty, freedom of life, and the happiness are basics of the American Dream. While to achieve the American Dream, the main characters face feeling of inferiority complex, therefore they strive goal of life to pursue their American Dream.
