Abstract

This study was about the effects of large classes on students’ motivation and participation during the teaching and learning process. The goal of this study was to know the effects of large classes on students’ motivation and participation during the teaching and learning process in the creative writing and poetry classes of College of Languages of Sultan Agung Islamic University in academic year 2015-2016. This study used a descriptive quantitative research design. The subject was fifth semester students especially the students of the creative writing and poetry. This study used close questionnaire and structured interview as the instrument to collect the data. Then, the data of the close questionnaire was calculated by using of SPSS 21 software application. The data of the interview were interpreted in order to classify the students’ motivation and participation. The result of the questionnaire and interview showed that the students’ motivation and participation were depended on the students themselves. Every student had different motivation whether internal and external. In short, the effects of large classes on students’ motivation and participation during the teaching and learning process were positive and negative. The positive effect was that the students could communicate to their friends closely and friendly, discuss the material together in or outside of the classroom, and share their idea or give their opinion in front of the class bravely. On the other hand, the negative effect was that they could not focus on the lecturer’s explanation because of the noisy and crowded condition, less concentration, and it made them did not understand the material.
