Abstract

The main objective of this research was to find out the effectiveness of using facebook as a teaching medium in improving students’ recount writing achievement of the tenth grade students. This research was conducted by using quasi experimental research which belonged to quantitative method. The population of this research was the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 11 Semarang in the Academic Year 2017/2018 with total number 74 students. The researcher used purposive sampling and two classes were taken as the samples, they were X MIPA 2 as the experimental group and X IPS 2 as the control group. The research instrument that was used in this research was test. Pre-test and post-test were given to both classes. Pre-test was given to the students of both classes before the researcher gave the treatments. Post-test was given after the treatment to measure the effectiveness of the treatments toward students’ writing achievement. Experimental group was taught by using facebook and control group was taught by using traditional method. The data from two classes were scored used SPSS 16.0 for windows to analyze the result of the post-test. T-test was applied to calculate the data. The result of T-test showed that the post-test mean score of experimental group was 83.66 and control group was 67.20. T-test calculation showed that there was a significant difference in the mean score of the both classes. It was indicated by result of post-test in experimental group was sig. (2-tailed) 0.003 < 0.05. It means that H1 was accepted and H0 was rejected. It could be concluded that the use of facebook was effective in improving students’ recount writing achievement.
