The object of this study is Amy Tan’s short story from The Joy Luck Club novel, entitled Two Kinds. The short story tells us about the life of a young Girl named Jing-Mei who comes from a Chinese family in America. In the story, it is narrated that Jing-Mei’s mother is very obsessed to the greatness of America. She insists Jing-Mei to be a prodigy child. In this study, the writer uses descriptive qualitative analysis. The data of the study are in the form of phrases, sentences, and dialogue. The data were gathered by reading the story, identifying, classifying, and reporting. The analysis was done by several techniques including exposing, explaining and interpreting. This study has two objectives. The First objective is to describe the struggle of a Chinese in order to pursue her American dream. The second one is to analyze the culture clash between American and Chinese as reflected in the story. The writers found that Chinese in America work harder to reach their American Dream. They want to pursue a happiness. Chinese want to be equal as the others. Although it is not easy to live in America, but they believe that America is a land of opportunity. Everything is possible to reach there.
