Abstract

This study was conducted to describe how Modified Monopoly Game applied in order to facilitate the fifth graders to practice their speaking skill and to explain if teachers and learners encountered difficulties in applying Modified Monopoly Game in the speaking class. In this study, the participants were the fifth grader students of Islamic Bina Insan Kamil Elementary School, Sidareja. This study belongs to qualitative research. Observation, questionnaire, and interview are the instrument used to get the related data. The questions in the questionnaire were designed in multiple choices. These questions were used to gain the students‟ opinion about the use of MMG as media for practicing their oral skill. Those method were used to find the information toward the use of MMG for teaching oral skill, to know the effect of the MMG for teaching speaking class. Based on the data collection, it was found that MMG brought many effects. MMG created the motivation for the students to speak english, it could be shown that 53% disagree that MMG made them feel bored. MMG gave the opportunity to speak English actively by 76% the students agreed to use an MMG to practice speaking English. The teacher said that her students could practice speaking without feeling shy, they were also very enthusiastic with that game, so that they could feel confident. The materials contained in that board game were not too difficult. In conclusion, MMG could be used to teach oral skill, as it could encourage the students‟ interest to practice oral skill in the class. Throught, this game they could do the interaction with other friends like in the social interaction.
