Abstract

The study was an attempt to show the correlation between students’ achievement in vocabulary mastery and their reading comprehension ability among the eleventh year students of SMA N 13 Semarang. Vocabulary mastery is an essential thing in reading comprehension. It helps the students comprehend the texts they read. In fact, vocabulary seems to become one of the problems generally faced by the students. This study belonged to correlation quantitative research. The population of this study was the eleventh year students of SMA N 13 Semarang in the academic year 2011/2012. The writer applied the purposive sampling technique to determine the sample in this study.The instrument of this study was the tests which consisted of vocabulary test and reading comprehension test. Multiple choice questions was used in those tests. The tests consisted of 60 items with four options, comprising 40 vocabulary test items and 20 reading comprehension test items. To collect the data, the writer involved several steps, they were : making tests, trying out the tests, andusing the tests. Then the writer analyzed the data based on statistic calculation by Pearson Product Moment Formula. The result of the test showed that the mean of vocabulary test score was 69.77 and the mean of reading comprehension test score was 71.67. It could be seen that the students had performed good enough in both tests. The result of data also showed the significant correlation between vocabulary mastery and reading comprehension ability which was 0.763. Then, the “r_table” was 0.349 and 0.448, it meant that the correlation coefficient (0.763) was bigger than the “r_table” (0.349) and (0.448). In other words, the null hyphothesis (Ho) was rejected and the alternative hypothesis (H1) was accepted. Therefore, the result of the study has found that there was a positive correlation between students’ achievement in vocabulary mastery and their reading comprehension ability of the eleventh year students of SMA N 13 Semarang. Based on the results, the writer concluded that there was correlation between vocabulary mastery and reading comprehension ability. It could be seen that vocabulary mastery affects comprehension and improves the students’ understanding of texts. Keywords :correlation, vocabulary mastery, reading comprehension ability
