Abstract

Vocabulary is one of the parts of teaching learning process at school. When introducing vocabulary, the teacher should present it in context which is familiar to the students. It is significant for the teachers to modify their ways of teaching in order to attract students’ interest, so that they can enjoy the lesson and will not get bored while the class is running. Short stories are one of the interesting materials because the students like imagination and fantasy. Short story is close to children’s life. Short stories can attract the students’ interest in learning vocabulary. The objective of the study is to find out the effectiveness of short stories as materials to teach vocabulary. The population of the study was grade VII students of SMP Islam Sultan Agung Semarang. The number of the students in grade VII was 74 who were divided into three classes. The sample of the study was 48 students who were devided into two groups as control and experimental group. Five steps have been done in doing the study. Firstly, the survey was given to all sample of the research. Secondly, treatment was given for experimental group. It was taught vocabulary by using short stories and the control group was taught by using pictures. Then, post test were given to both groups and questionnaire were given to experimental group. After getting the result, the t-test was used to analyze the data. The result of the data shows that t-value │±2.887 │> t-table│±2.0154│ and sig (0.006) < 0.05. It means that there was a significant difference of vocabulary mastery between students in the experimental and control groups. It was proven by the mean score of post test. The mean of the experimental group was higher than that of the control group (76.5333 > 70.1500). It is concluded that teaching vocabulary by using short stories is effective.
