Abstract

This final project is study about the use of word wall to improve students’ speaking ability of the first grade students at SMK Cut Nya’Dien. Most of students’ had difficulties in speaking ability before given treatment by using word wall as the media. The statements of the problem of the final project are (1) does the students’ speaking ability improve after being taught using word wall? (2) How is students’ perception toward the use of word wall to improve students’ speaking ability in the first grade students of SMK Cut Nya’Dien. The objectives of the study are (1) To find out how much students’ speaking ability improve after being taught using word wall (2) To know students perception toward the use word wall as media to improve students’ speaking ability. In this study the writer chooses a Quasi Experiment using pre-test and post test. The subjects of this study were class X KU which consists of 35 students of SMK Cut Nya’dien in Academic Year 2012/2012. This research used word wall as media in teaching speaking. The aim of this research was to know the improvement of students speaking ability by using word wall. This study was conducted in eight meetings. The instruments used in this study were pre-test, post –test, field notes, interview and questionnaire to collect data. The result of this study revealed that the post test scores were better than the pre-test scores. The mean of students’ mark in pre-test was 48.17; first cycle was 53.71 and post test 67.31. And the mean score of each aspect is as follows: pronunciation in pre-test was 2.31, first cycle 2.40 post –test 3.48 and the improvement from pre-test to post test was 1.17; grammar in pre-test was 2.57, 1st cycle was 3.20 and post test was3.42 while the improvement from pre-test to post test was 0.74; vocabulary in pre-test was 1.77, 1st cycle 2.31 and post test 3.42, and the improvement from 1st cycle to post test was 1.40; fluency in pre-test was 2.45, 1st cycle was 2.62 and post test was 3.14 while the improvement from pre-test to post test was 0.43; comprehension, the mean score in pre-test was 2.48, 1st cycle was 2.88 and post test 3.34, and the mean score improvement from pre-test to post test was 0.64. Whereas the whole mean score of each aspect of students achievement in pre-test was 2.33, 1st cycle 2.68 and post-test 3.36. And the improvement from pre-test to post test was 1.03. It is suggested that Word Wall in teaching speaking is high recommended for the English teacher. Key words: Word Wall, Media, Speaking
