Abstract
The novel It’s Kind of a Funny Story by Ned Vizzini is the subject of analysis in this study. The aim of this study is to analyze the anxiety experienced by Craig, the main character, and to examine how Craig alleviates his anxiety using Sigmund Freud's theories of anxiety and defense mechanisms. The method used in this study was descriptive qualitative. The primary data for this analysis was taken from the novel It’s Kind of a Funny Story (2006), consisting of dialogues, monologues, and narratives. Additionally, secondary data was drawn from various journals, articles, book reviews, and previous studies related to this study. The steps required to analyzed the data include reading the novel, identifying relevant data, and categorizing the data. The results of this study revealed two main findings. First, Craig experienced anxiety, specifically neurotic anxiety and moral anxiety. Second, Craig employed defense mechanisms to reduce his anxiety, namely rationalization, displacement, and reaction formation.
