Abstract

In the 1967, America laws banned interracial marriage between White and Black people because it was considered as illegal and a crime. This study elaborates the portrayal of discrimination and its effects because of interracial marriage as reflected in the Loving (2016) movie by Jeff Nichols. This study has two aims, to describe the discrimination in the main character of the movie and to describe the effects of the discrimination because of interracial marriage. This study was under the descriptive qualitative method. The primary data used is in the form of dialogue, monologue, and the scene in the Loving (2016) movie. The secondary data were taken from the e-journals, e-books, articles, websites, and essays. Moreover, watching the movie, reading the script, identifying the data, classifying the data, and reducing the data were the processes of the data collecting method. The last was data analyzing supported by the attachment of appendices and related theory descriptively. The result of this study shows two points. First, there is discrimination because of interracial marriage reflected on the main character, Richard Loving, as a White construction worker and Mildred, a local Black Women. They have to accept the mistreatments and discrimination from people even the authorities after they married and become an interracial marriage couples. Second, the main character has to suffer with lack of family support and psychological distress such as feeling of isolation and separation, anxiety and trust issues as the effects of discrimination that they got because of interracial marriage.
