Abstract

Budiman Achmad Sugandi. 182090151, ” The Effectiveness of Using English Short Film With English Subtitle to Improve Students’ Ability in Narrative Story Retelling(A Case of the Eleventh Grade Students of SMA N 1 Rowosari in Academic Year of 2013/2014)”. A final project, English Language Education Study Program, College of Languages Sultan Agung of Islamic University. Hartono, S.S., M.Pd as the advisor. This final project is about the use of English short film with English subtitle to improve students’ ability in narrative story retelling. The objective of this study is to find out whether using English short film with English subtitle is effective to improve students’ ability in narrative story retelling or not. The population of this study was the eleventh grade students of SMA N 1 Rowosari in academic year of 2013/2014 with a total number of 154 students. Quasi experimental groups design was used in this study. Two classes were taken as the samples. The data were collected using oral test. There were, try-out, pre-test and post-test. The result of this study shows that the pre-test average of experimental class was 64.88 and that of the control class was 64.12. After giving treatment for four meetings the post-test average of experimental class was 78.25 and that of the control class was 69.88. The result of the analysis showed that there was a significant difference. It was supported by t-test result, the significant difference in the result of post-test between control and experimental class was sig (2-tailed) 0.000< 0.05. Finally, it could be concluded that H was accepted. So, the use of English short film with English subtitle is effective to improve students’ ability in narrative story retelling.
