Abstract

English Language Education Program. Bachelor Degree, Sultan Agung Islamic University Semarang. Advisor: Prof. Dr. Warsono. M.A. Vocabulary is one of the parts of teaching learning process at school. When introducing vocabulary, the teacher should present it in context which is familiar to the students. It is significant for the teachers to modify their ways of teaching in order to attract students’ interest, so that they can enjoy the lesson and will not get bored while the class in running. Fairy tales are one of the interesting material bacause the students like fantasy and imagination. Fairy tales is close to children’s life. Fairy tales can attract the students interest in learning vocabulary. The objective of the study is to find out the effectiveness of fairy tales as materials to teach vocbulary. The population of the study was grade VII students MTs. Darul Hasanah Semarang. The number of the students in grade VII was 120 who were divided into three classes. The sample of the study was 78 students who were divided into two groups as experimental group and control group. Some steps have been done in doing the study. Fisrtly, the pre test was given to all sample of the research. Secondly, treatments were given to experimental group. It was taught vocabulary by using fairy tales and the control group was taught by using picture. Then, post test was given to both groups. After getting the result, the t-test was used to analyze of the data. The result of the data showed that the means score of pre test of the experimental group was 45.4 and that of the control group was 44.8. The means of post test of the experimental group was higher than that of the control group (80.90>72.64). It is concluded that teaching vocabulary by using fairy tales is effective.
