Abstract
This final project aims to analyze the gentleman meaning reveal by Pip. He experiences social status changing after getting inheritance and is disappointed by the fact that the gentlemen in his surrounding are not the gentleman he dreams of. Their behaviors are not as gentle as the term of gentleman. The study uses descriptive qualitative method. There are two kinds of data called primary data and secondary data. The primary data comes from the novel Great Expectations by Charles Dickens as the object of the study. And the secondary data takes from electronic books, international journal, articles, thesis, and essay. The data are collected by reading the novel Great Expectation, identifying, classifying and reducing. The analysis is done by several techniques including analyzing, interpreting and presenting. The analysis of this study finds three points. First, the social stratification is divided into three classes: Upper, Middle and lower class. Second, social status can be changed by working hard, running business or even getting inheritance. Last, Pip defines that being a gentleman does not mean of being rich. Hence a lower class can be a gentleman. Being a gentleman means to behave gentle. Keywords: Social class, Inheritance, Gentleman.
