Abstract

Diaspora has become a global issue because it relates to the civilization. The movement from a homeland to a hostland by the forced condition creates some effects for the immigrants who experience diaspora directly. This study deals with the issue of diaspora and the effects which are experienced by the first generation of Chinese people. The object of this study is a novel by Amy Tan entitled The Kitchen God’s Wife which illustrates how Winnie, the major character of the story, experiences diaspora and the effects which happen in America as her hostland. This study used Descriptive Qualitative method and the theory of diaspora. As the result, this study found that war and conflict in China made Winnie and other Chineses did diaspora. Winnie performed acculturation and memory of the homeland as the effects of diaspora in the hostland, the situation that could give a big effect for the people who experienced diaspora.
