Abstract
The purpose of this research is to find out the gaps of beliefs between teachers and students towards English as a Foreign Language class in XI IPA classes in SMA Islam Sultan Agung 3 Semarang in the academic year 2016 - 2017. This research uses descriptive qualitative research design. The subjects of this study are the English teachers and students of grade XI IPA academic year 2016/2017 in SMA Islam Sultan Agung 3 Semarang. Thus, there are 2 English teachers and 4 representative students from IPA classes who participated as samples or interviewees in this study. Semi-structured interviews as research instruments to obtain data related to research needs. After that, the data obtained from the interview processed by way of coding by researchers. Then, the results show that there is a common belief between teachers and students that they feel that group learning, the delivery of English-speaking teachers while teaching and social media engagement as a medium of learning is an effective approach for EFL classes. There is also disagreement over the procurement of online group learning or English club procurement, moral values teaching for students, favorable of the humourous teacher, and approaches by the game are also deemed necessary to optimize student’s learning. From the description above, it could be inferred that besides there are similarities, there are also differences as gaps of beliefs between them. This could be corrections and bridge for the teachers in order to know what students’ need to optimise their learning and result in EFL classroom. Keywords: Beliefs, EFL Classroom
