Abstract

It is known that in our country, Indonesia, English is a foreign language. In order to develop English that is played as the first foreign language in our country, people should concern with the first important thing in learning language, which is mastering vocabulary. It is the basic thing in learning language. Someone cannot speak, write and read without mastering vocabulary. Therefore, as language learners, students are supposed to master a lot of English vocabularies and so the aim of this research was to find out the effectiveness of using word analogies as a technique to improve students’ achievement in learning English vocabulary. The writer was conducted this study by using quasi experimental research because the writer compared two classes of experimental and control class. One group was given treatment using word analogies which is called experimental group, the other group was taught without using word analogies which was called control group. The population in this study was the tenth graders total of SMK Nusa Bangsa Mranggen in Academic Year of 2016/2017. There were 6 classes and each class consisted of 25 students. It means that there were 150 students in this population. The result of the research showed that the average score of pre-test of experimental group was 60.76 and that the control group was 55.88. While the result of post-test of the experimental group that has 69.52 was higher than the control group which had 62.68 and it was also supported by result of t-test in which the sig. (2-tailed) was 0.000<005. It means that there was a significant difference between students who were taught using word analogies and students who were taught by without using word analogies. Therefore, it can be concluded that word analogies technique was effective to improve students’ vocabulary. Keywords: word analogies, vocabulary
