Abstract

This final project analyzes the mechanism of escapes used by the main character in Kindred novel written by Octavia E. Butler. The main character in the novel experiences time travel to the past in a slavery era that causes feeling alone, isolated, and anxious. The aims of this study are to understand about the anxiety faced by main character, to understand how the main character copes her anxiety and to know how the main character reaches the meaning and purpose of her existence in the slavery era. This study uses humanistic psychoanalysis approach by Erich Fromm which discusses basic anxiety, mechanism of escapes, and the existential human needs. This study uses descriptive qualitative analysis in which the data are in a form of the words, phrases, and sentences. The collecting data retrieved through several stages including reading novel, identifying, classifying, inventorying, reducing, and reporting. This analysis is done using several techniques such as giving statements, explanations, and interpretations. The result of this study shows that Dana, as the main character in Kindred novel experiences basic anxiety when she is time travel to the past. In order to cope this problem she uses conformity as her mechanism of escapes. In addition, to achieve the purpose and meaning of her existence in slavery era, Dana fulfills five existential human needs such as the need of relatedness that is achieved by a way of submission and domination. Transcendence is fulfilled by way of creativity. Rootedness is achieved through productive strategy that encourages her to fulfills the need of sense of identity so that she reaches her individuality. Finally, Dana fulfills the need of frame of orientation in which she succeeds in achieving the meaning and purpose of her existence in the slavery era.
