Abstract
The title of this study is Using Realia as Media to Increase the Vocabulary Mastery of the Seventh Grade students of Junior High School. The question to be answered in this study was how effective is realia to be used as media to increase the students’ vocabulary mastery at MTs Miftahul Huda Kangkung, Mranggen, Demak. Therefore, the objective of the study was to reveal how effective realia is to improve the students vocabulry mastery by looking at the difference in vocabulary achievement between the experimental and control group. This study used quasi-experimental design. The population of this study was the seventh grade students of MTs Miftahul Huda Kangkung, Mranggen, Demak in the academic year of 2011/2012. The researcher took 2 classes from 4 classes as sample: class VII-A as the experimental group and class VII-D as the control group. The experimental group consisted of 25 students and the control group consisted of 24 students. The treatments given to the groups were different but the materials and topics were the same. The experimental group was treated using realia. Meanwhile, the control group was taught using conventional method. Before and after treatment, the students were asked to do pre test and post test. The test was employed in the form of multiple choice items. The mean score of experimental group based on the pre test was 54.40 while the mean score of control group was 59.33, so the difference between the two means was 4.93. Based on the post test the mean score of experimental group was 82.56 and the mean score of the control group was 72.50, so the difference between the two means was 10.06. In analyzing the data, the writer used SPSS program version 16.0. This program was used to find the validity, reliability of the test. However, before calculating the data, she checked if the data was normal by using normality test. The test result shows that the data is normal. The result of the data showed that sig(2-tailed) 0.000<0.05; it means that H1 was accapted. In conclution, using realia is effective and applicable to be used to increase students’ vocabulary mastery. Key Words : Vocabulary, Junior High School, Realia, Experimental Research.
