Abstract

This final project is an experimental research on the use of videos to improve the students’ writing skill in descriptive texts of the seventh grade students of SMP N 39 Semarang. The objective of this research is to what extent videos improve the students writing descriptive text. The population of this research was the seventh grade students of SMP N 39 Semarang which is consisted of eight classes. The total number of population was 288 students. Each class consisted of 36 students and they had the same characteristics, background of the study, and level of ability. The writer took two classes for the sample, 7A as the experimental class and 7B as the control class. The writer used a test to gather data. The test was writing composition. The students were expected to make descriptive composition which held on the pre-test and post-test activity. The result of the study revealed that there was difference of means between the experimental and control group. The pre-test of experimental group was 70,47 and the control group was 67,59. The students’ progress after getting videos as media was good (76,58), while the control group was (72,38). It showed that the experimental groups increase their achievement in writing descriptive text. From the findings, the writer can conclude that there is an improvement on the students’ ability in writing descriptive text by using videos as media. Thus, the teacher can use videos as media to improve the students’ ability in writing descriptive text. Hopefully, there will be further linguistic skills.
