Abstract
This study specifically focused on examining cultures and different culture between Chinese and American that are found in the characteristics of the characters, the objects are Nicholas Young, Rachel Chu, and Eleanor in Crazy Rich Asian. Addition, the purpose of this study is to learn more about the types of culture attached to the society in China and American on each of the characteristic in the movie. This study used qualitative method. It is supported by the primary data and the secondary data. The primary data were taken from Crazy Rich Asian movie script while the secondary data were supporting jurnals, e-book, sites that related to the study. The form of the data was in dialogue, monologue, and narration. The data were collected by watching the Crazy Rich Asian movie, reading the movie script, identifying, and reporting. The analysis was finished in some ways including showing and explaining. This research found several things. The first thing is Chinese Culture which is depicted, such as collectivism, high context, ascription, and long term orientation. They live very close to harmonious kinship, so that obedience must be maintained and culture is highly upheld. This study also found American cultures, such as individualism, uncertainty avoidance, long term orientation, and achievement. In short, Rachel and Nicholas faced many problem of their relationship from Eleanor because she does not like and against Rachel as American that can have negative impact by the destruction of Eleanor’s family in Chinese culture.
