Abstract

Dwi Afrizal Frianto. 182090157, Final Project” The Effectiveness of Using Authentic Materials to Improve Students’ Ability in Writing Procedure Text (A Case of the Tenth Grade Students of SMA Mardisiswa Semarang in Academic Year 2013/2014)”. A final project, English Language Education Study Program, College of Languages Sultan Agung of Islamic University. Hartono, S.S.,M.Pd as the first advisor and Prof. Dr. Warsono, M.A as the second advisor This final project is about the use of Authentic Materials to improve students’ ability in writing Procedure text. The objective of this study is to find out whether using authentic materials is effective to improve students’ ability in writing procedure text. The population of this study was the tenth grade students of SMA Mardisiswa Semarang academic year 2013/2014 with a total number of 100 students. Quasi experimental groups design was used in this study. Two classes were taken as the samples. The data were collected using writing test. There were, try-out, pre-test and post-test. The result of this study shows that the pretest average of experimental class was 60.00 and that of the control class was 59.76. After giving treatment for four meetings the posttest average of experimental class was 78. 60 and that of the control class was 66.88. The result of the analysis showed that there was a significant difference. It was supported by t-test result, the significant difference in the result of posttest between control and experimental class was 0.013 < 0.05. It means that the use of authentic materials in teaching writing Procedure text was better than that of the conventional method. The result of the pretest and posttest in the experimental class was sig. (2-tailed) 0.000 < 0.05. Finally, it could be concluded that H was accepted. So, the use of Authentic Materials is effective to improve students’ ability in writing Procedure text. 1 Keywords: Authentic Materials, Writing Ability, Procedure Text
