Abstract

Keywords: Ability, Conjunctions. The main objective of this research is find out how far the student‟s grammar mastery in using conjunctions and identify students of the problems they face in using English conjunctions the case of the third semester students English Education of College of Languages of Sultan Agung Islamic University in the academic year 2013/2014). The design of the research was descriptive research, and to get the data, the writer used grammar test in the form of fill in the blank test, considering it is the most researched procedure for assessing structure in grammar. The test consisted of 40 questions; they were 20 questions for coordinating conjunction and 20 questions for subordinating conjunction. The writer gave 45 minutes to do the test. Before the test was used, it had been tried out first. The purpose of conducting the try-out was to find out the validity, reliability of the test as an instrument. The result of the analysis showed that the ability of the Third Semester Students of English Education of the College of Languages of Sultan Agung Islamic University in the Academic year 2013/2014 in using conjunctions was moderate. It was proved by the fact that there were 16 students (50%) who got moderate ability, 8 students (25%) got the high ability and 8 students (25%) got the low ability. The problem faced by the students in using conjunctions was using subordinate conjunction. It was indicated by both the difference in the mean score between the use of coordinate conjunctions and the use of subordinate conjunctions. The mean of subordinate conjunctions was 69.06, it was lower that of the use of coordinate conjunctions which was 80.94. It means that students still did not understand well in using conjunctions.
