Abstract

Difference of society background in a country can appear social problems like discrimination. It is experienced by Khalil as Blacks in America, he experiences different treatment from White officer. This study aims to explain about causative factors of racial discrimination, forms of racial discrimination and negative impact of racial discrimination that is experienced by Blacks. This study used descriptive qualitative method. The data of the study consisted of sentences, prologues, monologues and dialogues that was obtained by reading the novel, identifying, classifying, reducing, analyzing the data as qualitative. The study used racial discrimination approach. It was done to get deep understanding of the unfair treatment experienced by African-American people. The study results some findings. First, factors caused racial discrimination are experienced by Khalil as Black character that are racism, stereotype and prejudice which are done by White officer. Second, Khalil experiences some forms of racial discrimination, those are racial discrimination on the road, in getting justice and in getting a job. Third, the negative impac t of racial discrimination is not only experienced by Khalil as the victim but it is also experienced by Starr as his peer. Some negative impacts are experienced by them, those are health problem, well-being problem and influence of emotional reactions.
