Abstract

This study analyzes the issue of diaspora which are experienced by the immigrants who leave their homeland to a new country caused by any condition that happens in their homeland. The purposes of this study are to identify Mrs. Pan diasporic experiences and to analyze the impacts of diaspora which are experienced by her as the analyzed character. This study was conducted under a descriptive qualitative method, supported by primary data and secondary data. The primary data was taken from a short story entitled The Good Deed by Pearl S. Buck published in 1953 and the secondary data were taken from journals, e-journals, books, e-books. In conclusion, this study described how the phenomenon of diaspora reflected in The Good Deed short story. This study found that Mrs. Pan diasporic experiences because of the conflict which happened in China. She undergoes diasporic experiences in her process of movement to the new country like acculturation, continued by acculturative stress and separation as one of acculturation’s strategy. She also experienced the psychological impact of diaspora which was a memory of the homeland that consists of recollection and repetition.
