ABSTRACT Soil is one of nature’s most abundant construction materials that is directly available in the site. All of pavement structure are also laid over the soil called subgrade or road bed soil. The condition or strength of the pavement are depend on the quality of subgrade. The more strength of subgrade material the less of the thickness of the pavement structure and inverse, the less strength of subgrade material the more thick of the pavement structure. The strength of subgrade soil are measured by their CBR value for flexible pavement and by Modulus Resilient (MR) for rigid pavement. Soil can be classified as a good subgrade if have 5 to 10 % of CBR value or 10.000 to 20.000 psi of MR value. Type of the soil in North-Eastern of Central Java generally an expansive clay which consists of montmorillonite mineral, which have high shrinkage and swelling. Over those type of soil, the 64 km length of pavement of the road connecting Semarang to Purwodadi are laid. As the reason, the structure pavement condition is always damage and in worst condition. The damages like a pot-hole, permanent deformation and crocodile crack are encountered. Most efforts have been conducted to solve the damage or to reduce the swelling and shrankage potential among other but never succeed, in this final assignment, Feldspar will be studied as stabilization material. The objective of this study was to investigate the feasibility of using Feldspar as an expansive clay soil stabilization. Stabilization was conducted by adding Feldspar to the expansive clay soil a mount of 5 to 20% in increments of 5%. To prove that Feldspar feasible to be used as expansive clay soil stabilizer, some test include Atteberg Limit, Specific Grafity, Sieve analysis, Hydrometer, modified Proctor, CBR and Direct Shear tests were conducted. All tests were performed in the Soil Mechanic Laboratory of Engineering Faculty of UNISSULA. The results show that the clays according ASSHTO soil included in the group of A-7-5, and according to the USCS in the group C (soil with high plasticity) and a group containing Montmorrilonite. Then have a specific gravity of 2,81 with the addition of Feldspar 20% decline to 44,5% liquid limit, plastic limit rises to 57%, and plasticity index fell to -12,5%. Then the result from unsoaked CBR value increase from 5,86% to 6,4%, 7,34%, 8,56%, and 9,72% after added with Feldspar 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20% respectively. Other test results Atteberg limit test (liquid limit, plastic limit and plasticity index), specific gravity, optimum water content with modified proctor, and direct shear test increased. From the test results can be concluded that Feldspar is feasible to be use to stabilized expansive clay soil, and can be introduced as the new material for soil stabilization.
