Abstract

The aim of this study was to know whether the use of GIST strategy is effective or not to improve the 10th graders’ reading narrative text achievment at SMAN 1 Juwana in the academic year of 2017/2018. The design of this study was quasi experimental design because the selection of the sample was not random, and the method that used is quantitative method. The sample of this study consisted of 35 students of class X MIPA 1 as experimental class, and 36 students of class X MIPA 3 as control class. To know the validity and the reliability of the instrument it was done by giving the try out test to the X IPS 5. Then to get the data, pre-test and post-test was given to the control group and experimental group. The result then analyzed by using SPSS v.16.0 software program. In this study, there are three steps, pre-test, treatments and post-test. The result of the pre-test and post-test of experimental group were 65.26 and 84.86. While the result of pre-test and post-test of control group were 63.86 and 69.69. After getting the results of post-tests, then by using T-test, the post-test results from both class were counted. The result shows that the mean of the control group was 69.69 and the experimental group was 84.86. It means that the ability of the experimental group was higher than control group. The result of the analysis shows that there was significant difference. It can be seen that sig (2 tailed) 0.000 < 0.05. It means that there was significant difference between both of them. It was concluded that H1 was accepted and H0 was rejected. Therefore, the use of GIST strategy to improve the tenth graders’ reading narrative text at SMAN 1 Juwana is effective.
