Abstract

Sofiatin, Anisa. 2014.“The Effectiveness of Jigsaw Words Game to Teach Writing Simple Sentences in the Simple Present Tense (An Experimental Research on the Ninth Grade Students of SMP Islam Terpadu PAPB Semarang in the Academic Year of 2014/2015). Advisor: Benny Krisbiantoro, S.Pd, M.Pd.A final project. English Education Department, Under Graduate School, Sultan Agung Islamic University, 2014. This study is about teaching writing simple sentences in the simple present tense using jigsaw words game, to the ninth grade students of SMP IT PAPB Semarang. The objective of this study is to find out whether jigsaw words game technique is effective to teach writing simple present tense. The design of this study was experimental study which is included to quantitative method. The population of the study was the ninth grade students of SMP IT PAPB Semarang in the academic year of 2014/2015 with a total number of 87 students. The writer used not randomly assigned sampling technique and two classes were taken as the samples, they were IX C as experimental class and IX B as control class. The instrument of the study used multiple choice test. The writer used two kinds of test: pre-test and post-test. Before the experiment was conducted, a pre-test was given to both groups. A post-test was given after the treatment was done. Then, the data from the two tests were scored and the writer used SPSS for Windows version 16.0 to analyze the result of the pre-test and posttest. The result of t-test showed that the mean score of the experimental group in pre-test was 63.24 and the mean score of the control group was 65.03. After conducting the experiment, the writer gave the post test. The mean score of posttest of the control group was 74.28 and that of the experimental group was 78.69. The t-test calculation showed that the difference is significant. It was supported by the result of the pre-test and post-test in the experimental class was sig. (2-tailed) 0.000 < 0.05. It could be concluded that H 1 was accepted. So, the use of jigsaw words game technique in teaching writing simple present tense was effective. Teaching writing simple present tense using jigsaw words game is a good way to help the students improve their achievement in writing simple sentences in the simple present tense and the English teacher should be creative in creating the new ideas to teach English writing.
