Abstract
The study attempts to figure out whether or not using Guiding Question technique is effective to improve students’ writing skill in descriptive text. The population of this study was tenth graders of an Islamic senior high school in the academic year of 2016/2017 with the total number around 74 students. The design of this study used quasi experimental research with on-random purposive sampling in which there were two groups taken as samples; class X A as control group and X B as experimental group. The instrument of study was writing test. There were two kinds of test; Pre-test and Post-test. Pre-test was given to both groups before giving treatments. A Post-test was given after treatment was done. The data were analyzed by using SPSS for windows version 23.0 to the result of Pre-test showed that the mean score of experimental group was 50.05 while control group was 49.57. The result of post test showed that the mean scores of experimental class was 71.81 meanwhile control class was 68.00. There were different gain score between mean score of the both groups result for experimental group which got 21.76 and control group which got 18.43. T-test calculation showed that there was a significance difference. It was supported by T-test analysis between pre-test and post-test in experimental class that sig. (2-tailed) 0.009 < 0.05 and t-value was higher than t-table (2.680 > 1.993). It means that Ho was rejected and Ha was accepted which reflects that Guiding Question is effective to improve tenth graders descriptive writing skill. Keywords: Guiding Question Technique, Writing Skill, Descriptive Text.
