Abstract
Paraphrasing technique is one of techniques used in the school to improve students’ reading comprehension. The purpose of this study is to know whether paraphrasing technique is effective to improve the students’ reading comprehension of hortatory exposition text of the eleventh graders of SMA Ky Ageng Giri in Academic Year 2016/2017. This study used quasi experimental design. This study took XI IPA 1 as the experimental class and XI IPA 2 as the control class. The researcher has done some steps, they were try out, pre-test, treatments, and post test. This study analyzed the data by using independent sample t-test formula. The pre-test results of experimental and control class were 43.4848 and 43.1818. It proved that the students’ ability before the treatment was poor. The post result showed that the experimental class got higher score than the control class 77.7273>54.0909. The result showed that sig. (2-tailed) 0.001 was less than 0.05. It means that the treatment improves students’ reading comprehension and HO was rejected and HI was accepted. Based on the result above, it can be concluded that paraphrasing technique is effective to improve students’ reading comprehension of hortatory exposition text of the eleventh graders of SMA Ky Ageng Giri in the Academic Year 2016/2017.
