Abstract

Keywords: Materialism, Class Struggle, Working Class, Ruling Class. This study analyzes materialism and class struggle as portrayed in the novel “Fall of Giants”. This study also analyzes the role of class struggle, the working class and the ruling class as well as the influence of materialism in the main character of the novel. This study aims to gain a deep understanding of materialism and how the working class’s struggle to raise their classes. The object of this study is Fall of Giantsnovel by Ken Follett. The study used a descriptive qualitative method. Data are obtained in the form of phrases, written monologue, written dialogue and sentence. Data are obtained through several stages, such as reading novels, identifying, analyzing and reporting the results of the analysis. The techniques used in this analysis, including exposure, and cited explanation. In analyzing the data, this study uses the theory of materialism. This analysis finds some results. The first result is the difference between the life of the working class and the ruling class that triggered the conflict in both class. Because of this differences based on their interest both of classes fight each other. The second is the influence of materialism towards the main character.
