Abstract

The objective of the study was to find out the effectiveness the use of jigsaw technique to improve students’ reading comprehension of eighth grade students at MTs. Walisongo Kayen – Pati in the academic year 2012/2013. The study limited only in narrative text on the use of jigsaw technique to improve students’ reading comprehension. The population of the study was eighth grade students of MTs. Walisongo Kayen – Pati in the academic year of 2012/2013. In this study, the writer used quasi-experimental research design. The total sample of the study was 75 who were divided into two group, 8th B Class as the control group and 8th U Class as the experimental group. The instrument of the study was test. The type of test was multiple choice test type. Four steps have been done in conducting the study. The First, the tryout was given to 8th C Class to test the validity and the reliability of question which would give to the students in pre-test. The second, pre-test was given in control group and experimental group. The third, treatments was given for experimental group. It was taught narrative texts by using Jigsaw technique while the control group was taught by using the conventional teaching technique. The last step was post test. Post test was given to both of groups. After getting the result, the result of the data was analyzed by using SPSS for Windows Release version 16.0. The analysis of the data showed that the mean of the students’ achievement on the pre-test of the control group was 68.10 and the experimental group was 67.58. However, in the post-test they showed the different mean scores. The result of the data showed that the mean of post test in the control group was 64.64 and the experimental group was 84.85. It was supported by the result of T-test that showed sig (2-tailed) was 0.00. It means that there was significant difference in the result of post test between control group which taught using conventional teaching technique and experimental group which taught using jigsaw technique. So that, it was concluded that teaching narrative texts using jigsaw technique was effective. Keyword : Reading comprehension, Jigsaw Technique.
