Abstract

This thesis is intended to describe the implementation of teaching speaking by using Role Play. The objective of the study is to discover whether Role Play is affective technique in teaching speaking. Quasi-experimental research was used here to get the data. One kind of instrument was used to collect the data namely test. The population in this study was the eighth year of students Mts Miftahul Huda Tayu-Pati Academic Year 2010/2011. The number of the population was 60 students classified into two classes, they are: VIII C and VIII D. In taking the sample, the writer used purposive sampling. The writer began the research by giving a pre-test to the students on both of groups. After that, the treatments were given to both groups. The treatments consisted of four meetings. At the end of the research, the writer gave post test. In the treatments group, the writer asked the students to perform the dialogue in front of the class. While in the non-treatment, the writer asked the students to retell a story in front of the class. The mean score of experimental group (79.20 was higher than the mean score of control group (65.7). The T-test application to the scores of two groups showed that t-value (10.82) is higher than t-table (2.0017). It means that there is significant difference of the students’ speaking between those thought using Role play and those thought without using Role play. From the statistical analysis, it can be concluded that the students’ speaking skills gained significant improvement after being taught using Role Play. Based on the research, it can be concluded that teaching speaking by using Role Play is affective. It suggested tha English teacher should be active and creative in the teaching speaking.
