Abstract

This final project is a study of student’s ability in writing descriptive text. Descriptive text is the form of writing used to describe a particular person, place, or thing. The aims of this study are 1) to measure how far the students’ ability in writing descriptive texts. (2) to find out the problems encountered by the students in writing descriptive texts. (3) to find out some possible solutions to solve the problems encountered by the students in writing descriptive texts. This study was conducted in SMA N 1 Bawang. The method used in this research was descriptive qualitative research. The sample was the eleventh grade students in the academic year 2011/2012. The writer took 28 students by using purposive sampling. A test was carried out before administering the research. The writer gave the test to the students. The instrument that was used is a written test consisting of an outline in writing a descriptive text. After getting the data, then the writer analyzed them. The writer identified and gave the score which focused on content, organization, vocabulary, grammar, and mechanic. From the test result we know that the mean score of content mastery is 77.02% or has reached above average. The mean score of students’ organization mastery is 76.42% or has reached above average. The mean score of students’ vocabulary mastery is 73.93% or has reached average achievement. The mean score of students’ grammar mastery is 58.14% or has reached below average. The mean score of students’ mechanic mastery is 67.86% or has reached average achievement. So, the total percentage of students mastery is 71.11%. It can be categorized into the third rank, that is fair or average achievement. To improve the quality of English teaching and learning process, the teacher should pay more attention to teaching English skill especially the student’s ability in writing text. Furthermore the teacher should help the students how to write a descriptive text correctly. Key Words: Student’s ability, Writing, Descriptive Text
