Abstract

This final project is a quasi-experimental research. In this study, the writer used quasi-experimental design: non-equivalent control group design and it was done in three activities they were pre-test, treatment and post-test. The writer limited this study by stating the following problems: “How well do the eighth year students at SMPN 39 Semarang write recount text?”, ”Is there any difference in the students’ writing ability between those who are taught using comics and those who are taught without using comics in writing recount texts?”. The aims of this experimental research are first to find out how well the eighth year students at SMPN 39 Semarang in writing recount text before the treatment. Second, to find out how well the eighth year students at SMPN 39 Semarang write recount text after being taught use comics as a teaching media in recount writing. So, we can determine whether there is a significant difference in the students’ ability in writing recount text between those taught using comics and those taught without using comics as teaching media. The study was conducted on May, 5th - June, 14th 2011. To obtain the data, the writer used quasi-experimental design: non-equivalent control group design. In order to know the students’ achievement the writer used T-test. The result of the study shows that there was significant difference in students’ ability in writing recount texts between those who were taught using comics and those taught without using comics in writing recount texts as teaching media. The students’ results of the pre-test 51.31 for experimental group and 44.23 for control group; the students’ results of post-test were 66.7969 for experimental group and 53.8226 for control group and the T-test shows that the difference of students’ result is significant. Dealing with this quasi-experimental research, the writer suggests that comics can be used as a teaching media in teaching and learning recount texts. The purpose is to create a new situation that makes students interested in learning English and to develop students’ ability in learning writing.
